India Visa
Easy and straightforward to do in Kathmandu (Nepal) in one week. The only downside is that you can only get a 3-month one-entry visa.
The embassy is some 15 minutes walking from Thamel and they open from 9:30 until 12 pm every day except Saturdays and Sundays. You have to visit it 3 times. If you go there a bit before they open you will have to wait for an hour to hand in your documents (if you go there too early you will have to wait outside anyway). When they open the doors take a number and wait for your turn.
-1st visit: bring a copy of your passport, a copy of your Nepalese visa, one picture (it has to be of a special size, so have it taken anywhere in Kathmandu), 4900 Nepalese Rupees (for most nationalities) and the completed online application form. You will be told to come back in 5 working days (we applied on Monday and came back on Friday).
-2nd visit: go again before they open in the morning, take the number and wait for your turn. Bring the receipt they gave you the first day and your passport. You will have to leave the passport there until the following working day and they will tell you the details of your visa, at this time for everybody the visa is valid for 3 months from the day of your second visit and with only one entry, no matter what you write in your online application form.
-3rd visit: go there at 4pm to collect your passport wth the Indian visa stamped on it. No queues this time.
If you are applying for your visa in Colombo (Sri Lanka), the procedure is similar. You will need two pictures, an online application form, a copy of your passport and your Sri Lankan Visa, a Fax Form, a handwritten form saying your itinerary and around 3000 rupees to be payed on the spot.
You have to go to the IVS Lanka located south of Colombo three times. On the first visit, you will provide all documents (in case of any problem there are two agencies next to the IVS that help you with whatever you need), on the second one (after 5 working days) you will deliver your passport and on the third one (the following working day) you will ollect it with your Indian visa.
Note that you will normally get a 6-month visa but the amount of entries depend on if you have previously visited India. I got a 2-entry 6-month visa, while other people who had not been in India before got 3 or multiple entries.
Important: In the application form, where it says port of entry and port of exit write ALL PORTS, otherwise you'll have to come back to Sri Lanka.
